Who can return the car vs. who can drive it

There are two different things here, and it matters which one you mean:

• Dropping off / handing back the keys — almost always fine for anyone. They're not operating the vehicle in traffic, just returning it.
• Driving the car to the return location — only an authorized (additional) driver listed on the rental agreement should do this. If an unlisted person drives and something happens, your protection can be void and you could be liable.

💡 Rule of thumb: if someone else needs to drive the car at any point, add them as an additional driver at pickup. If they're only handing the keys back, that's usually no problem.

You're still on the hook

Whoever returns it, the person named on the agreement is responsible for fuel level, cleanliness, damage, tolls, and late fees. Ask whoever returns it to note the fuel gauge and snap a few photos of the car at drop-off — a smart habit that protects you either way.
